Version history
Every save is kept, so every change can be inspected and undone. The Version history table is at the foot of the page's edit screen.
The table has these columns:
| Column | Shows |
|---|---|
| # | The version number. Newest first. |
| State badge | Published on the version visitors see, with "Published by" and a name beneath it; Draft on the version being edited; Archived on every other version. |
| Change note | The note recorded when the version was published, if any. |
| By | The account that saved the version. Account removed appears where that account has since been deleted, and Not recorded where no account was recorded. |
| Saved | The date and time the version was saved. |
Recording a change note
To record why a change was made:
- On the page's edit screen, open More actions and select Publish.
- Fill in Change note. Its placeholder reads "What changed, and why". The field is optional.
- Confirm.
The note is shown in the version history beside the published version. A note records the reason for a change, which a list of timestamps does not.
Version actions
Each row of the table has these actions:
- Preview opens that version in the same slide-in panel as the page's preview, beside the history it was chosen from. The share icon in that panel sends a link to that version, not to the current draft, so a reviewer can be asked whether to return to it.
- Compare opens a window headed Compare with the current draft, which shows what differs between that version and the version currently being edited.
- Restore copies that version forward as a new draft. Restoring deletes nothing: the restored content becomes the newest version, which is then published as normal, so a restore can itself be undone. Restore is not shown on the current draft.
- Publish appears on the draft row only, and publishes it.
Deleting old versions
A page edited over a long period accumulates versions that are no longer needed. To delete them:
- On the page's edit screen, under Version history, tick the checkbox at the left of each version to delete. The checkbox in the header row selects every version on the current page of the table.
- Select Delete versions in the toolbar above the table.
- Read the confirmation and select Delete them.
The published version has no checkbox and can never be deleted. The current draft has a checkbox only when the page also has a published version. Deleting that draft discards its unpublished changes and returns the page to its published version. A draft on a page that has never been published has no checkbox, because it is the only record of what the page says.
Deleting versions cannot be undone. A version is the only record of what the page said at that moment, and a deleted version cannot be restored.
Delete versions is shown only to accounts permitted to delete content.
