Saving, publishing and drafts

The page edit screen has one primary button and a menu:

  • Save & publish saves the page and makes the saved version the one visitors see, in one step. Its keyboard shortcut is Ctrl+Shift+S (Cmd+Shift+S on a Mac).
  • More actions opens a menu containing Save, Publish, Preview, View live page, Add a child page, Duplicate page, Unpublish and Delete. Items that do not apply to the page are not shown; for example, Unpublish appears only on a published page.

Save records the edits as a new draft version. Visitors see no change. Its keyboard shortcut is Ctrl+S (Cmd+S on a Mac). Saving has no cost, and every saved version can be recovered, so save as often as needed.

Publish makes the current draft the version visitors see. It asks for confirmation and offers an optional Change note, described in section 11. It is shown only when there is an unpublished draft. Save & publish does not offer a change note; to record one, select Save and then Publish.

When a page is published and has a saved draft that has not been published, the edit screen shows a warning reading This page has unpublished changes. Use it to tell whether your work is visible to the public: while the warning is shown, the public site still displays the previous published version.

To take a page off the site without deleting it:

  1. On the page's edit screen, open More actions.
  2. Select Unpublish.
  3. Confirm. The confirmation states that the page will stop serving publicly and that drafts and history are kept.

The page's address stops serving to visitors, and its content and version history are retained. Publishing it again puts it back.

Edit conflicts

A page can be saved from three places: the panel, the editor on the page itself, and an AI agent connected to the CMS. If one of them saves the page while it is open in the panel, the panel does not let you save over that newer version. It shows the message This page changed somewhere else and the button Load the newer version.

Loading the newer version discards the edits you have made in this window and replaces them with what was saved elsewhere. The panel does not merge the two. The other version is not affected. To keep your edits, copy them somewhere before loading the newer version, then re-enter them.

On a site set up for live updates, the panel shows This page just changed somewhere else as soon as the other save happens, and you can keep working until you try to save. On a site without live updates, the check happens when you save. In both cases nothing is overwritten.
