Redirects
A redirect sends visitors from one address to another. The CMS creates a redirect automatically whenever a page is renamed or moved, so a link to the old address keeps working.
Redirects can also be added by hand, which is needed when retiring a page or when bringing addresses across from a previous website:
- In the sidebar, select Redirects.
- Select New redirect.
- Enter the old address in From, for example
/old-page. The leading slash is optional. - Enter the destination in To, for example
/new-page. - Leave Status at 301 unless the redirect is temporary and the address will be used again later.
- Select Create.
Each redirect records its Hits and when it was Last used. Switching a redirect off keeps the row and its hit count and stops the redirect.
Before deleting a page, add a redirect from its address to the page that replaces it. A visitor arriving from an old link or a search result then reaches that page instead of a 404 page.
