The settings every block has
Every block, whatever its type, has the same seven settings in addition to its own fields. They behave identically on every block.
A block's fields are divided into three tabs. Every block has the same three, in the same order, both in the panel and in the editor on the page itself:
- Content holds the block's own fields.
- Layout holds Width, Alignment and CSS classes.
- Configuration holds Hide, Anchor, Accessible name and Landmark.
If a save fails because of a field on a tab that is not open, the panel opens that tab and scrolls to the field.
| Setting | Tab | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Hide | Configuration | Takes the block off the published page without deleting it. The block stays in the editor with its content intact, and its row is marked Hidden. Use it to retire a block temporarily, or to prepare a block before it should be seen. |
| Width | Layout | Sets how wide the block is on the page. The options are Normal (the width the page template uses, and the default), Narrow (a reading width, even on a wide template), Wide (wider, still inside the page's column) and Full bleed (edge to edge, outside the column). |
| Alignment | Layout | Lines up the block's text and centers the pictures, videos and buttons inside it. The options are Left, Center and Right; the empty choice, Default β follow the container, inherits the alignment of the container the block is in. |
| CSS classes | Layout | Adds CSS class names to the block's outermost element. Type a class and press Enter. The classes have an effect only when the site's developer has written styles for them. |
| Anchor | Configuration | Gives the block an identifier that can be linked to, so that /about#pricing scrolls the visitor to the block. It must start with a letter and may contain only letters, digits, hyphens and underscores. |
| Accessible name | Configuration | Text a screen reader announces in place of the block's own text. Use it only when the block has no visible heading that states its purpose. Limited to 120 characters. |
| Landmark | Configuration | Declares the block as a region that assistive technology can jump to: Region, Complementary, Navigation, Content info or Search. Leave it blank for ordinary content. An incorrect value tells a screen reader something untrue about the page. |
Alignment on containers
Alignment set on a container applies to every block inside it. Setting Alignment on a Section, a column, a tab or an accordion entry aligns all of the blocks in it, so centering a band of the page takes one setting.
A block inside a container can set its own alignment, which overrides the container's. A block left on Default β follow the container follows the container it is in.
Alignment does not do two things:
- It does not move a block sideways on the page. A block's horizontal extent is set by its Width; alignment lines up the content *inside* the block. To make a block narrower or wider, change its Width.
- It does not rearrange the items of a Logo Wall, an Image Grid or a Cards block. Those blocks lay out their own items in a row or grid, and alignment leaves that layout unchanged.
A picture moves visibly only when it is narrower than the space it sits in. A full-width image has no space to move into, so centering it changes nothing.
